Leaving HughesNet
Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation filed for Chapter 11 on 3 August 2026. The company says it intends to keep serving customers through the restructuring, and its stated plan is to shift from a consumer business toward enterprise and government work. If you are a HughesNet consumer subscriber, nothing switches off tomorrow, but this is a reasonable moment to find out what else reaches your address.
What actually happened
Hughes Satellite Systems Corporation entered Chapter 11 on 3 August 2026. Chapter 11 is a reorganisation, not a shutdown: the business continues operating while it restructures its debts.
The numbers behind it are worth understanding, because they explain the direction of travel. HughesNet had more than 1.5 million broadband subscribers in mid-2020. At the time of filing it had 641,000, a 22% decline over the preceding year, and the company stated it does not expect that trend to reverse. Its reorganisation plan is built around a $1.5 billion contracted enterprise backlog and a shift toward enterprise, government and defence customers, alongside roughly 400 layoffs.
Read plainly: the consumer satellite business is not the part of the company being reorganised around. That is not a prediction about your service, and it is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to know your alternatives before you need them.
Why HughesNet felt the way it did
HughesNet is geostationary satellite. The satellite sits about 22,000 miles above the equator, so a signal has to travel there and back for every request. That is roughly a quarter of a second of unavoidable delay before anything else is accounted for. It is why video calls feel wrong on it, why gaming is impractical, and why pages seem slow even when the advertised speed is high.
This is physics, not a fault, and no plan upgrade changes it. It also means that any replacement which is not geostationary will feel dramatically better even at similar advertised speeds.
Work out what reaches you, in this order
- Check for fiber or cable at your exact address. Coverage stops at the edge of a build, so a neighbour's answer is not your answer. Your county page tells you how likely this is where you live.
- Check 5G home internet. T-Mobile and Verizon qualify addresses individually. This is the option that most often surprises people, and it needs no dish and no installer.
- Check for a local fixed-wireless operator. In counties where the FCC data shows heavy licensed fixed wireless, these are frequently the best service available and they are invisible on national comparison sites.
- Then consider low-earth-orbit satellite. Starlink orbits far lower, so the latency problem largely disappears. It needs sky, not line of sight to a tower.
- Geostationary satellite last. If nothing above reaches you, it is still better than nothing, and it is still the same physics.

A regional operator beaming service from a tower or ridge to an antenna on your roof. In much of rural America this is the fastest thing available.

- Needs line of sight. Quality varies enormously between operators; ask neighbours, not the sales page.

Starlink
Low-earth-orbit satellite. Latency is low enough for video calls and most gaming, unlike older satellite services.

- Anywhere with a clear view of the sky and no wired option
- Watch out
- Hardware costs money up front, and heavy tree cover or a north-facing obstruction will cost you throughput

- Same latency ceiling. Read the data-priority terms rather than the headline speed.

Before you cancel anything
- Get the replacement working first. Overlapping by a month is cheaper than being offline for two weeks.
- Check what you owe on equipment. Satellite hardware is often leased, and returning it has a process and a deadline.
- Take a note of your current bill and speed before switching, so you can tell whether the new thing is actually better.
